Wayland to Break Ground on New Fine Arts Center

WAYLAND, Mich. (WZZM)- Wayland School District leaders will break ground on a new fine arts center tonight. Back in May 2008, voters in Wayland passed a $39M bond to give its high school a facelift. Part of that renovation was the creation of the Wayland Union Fine Arts Center may look like when it’s completed.

Some of the highlights include an 800 hundred seat auditorium and technology upgrades. Superintendent Eivor Swan says the facility will become a point of pride for the community. “We do have a small auditorium in the high school right now,” explained Swan. “Since Wayland has grown since that was built, it just isn’t enough to meet the needs of the community. And we have an excellent fine arts program & an excellent music program and we just wanted a nice venue to showcase our student’s talents and what they can do.”

In addition to the new auditorium, construction crews will also add a new kitchen and a dual purpose lobby that will also serve as the cafeteria. Tonight’s groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 7 p.m.
at Wayland High School near the practice football field. The high school is located at 870 East Superior Street.
