Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital Lobby
Description
Spectrum Health embarked on a major project to expand healthcare services provided within the City of Grand Rapids. GMB A+E was contracted to design and oversee the remodeling of the Butterworth Lobby, which is the main connector between Butterworth Hospital, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Meijer Heart Center, and Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion. Together with the team at Spectrum Health, GMB A+E designed the new space incorporating functional needs and becoming the hub for patients and public to transition between the different hospital services. It is anticipated that approximately 2,200 people will move through this new main entrance on a daily basis.
Colors, shapes and texture were selected as an important element to provide a positive experience for people moving through this space. The use of high ceilings, the curvilinear floor plan layout, the use of natural warm materials like wood, stone, and textured glass panels provide a welcoming atmosphere and calming effect for patients, staff, and visitors. The design reflects the quality of healthcare that is provided throughout the hospital.
